Preparing for Moving Day in Boston

Preparing for Moving Day in Boston

September 1st is known in Boston as “Moving Day,” with the majority of leases taking effect. Navigating through Moving Day can be a challenge between road changes, student move-ins, and parking permits. If you are getting ready to move, make sure you follow these tips to settle into your new home!

Make Sure You Have Parking Permits

Parking permits are vital throughout moving week. In addition to protecting your vehicle from tickets, the permit allows you to park a moving truck in front of your new home. With everyone else around the city moving on the same day, parking will be nearly impossible to find, and you might wind up paying for additional hours to accommodate for the parking search. The permit will allow you to park for a designated time during the day in order to allow your neighbors time to park.

Check Your Moving Company’s License & Insurance

The majority of last-minute calls to moving companies during the first week of September come from students or families whose moving companies took advantage of them or disappeared at the last minute. Make sure you check your company’s license online before putting down a deposit or signing a contract and have the company provide a written estimate for services. The estimate should cover all aspects of the move, from mileage to loading and unloading the truck to insurance. Making sure your moving company is properly insured will protect you in the event that one of the team members is injured during your move, or if one of your belongings is broken or lost in transit.

Delay Your Moving Date if Possible

Are most of your belongings in storage? If so, try to delay your moving date by a few days. While living with just the bare necessities isn’t ideal, you will be able to save a great deal of time and money by waiting for the initial wave to pass. If your items are in storage, make sure you check with your storage company about when your unit needs to be cleared. If you are working with a virtual storage company like OnDemand Storage, the contents of your storage unit can even be delivered to you.
